I have a female guppy thats HUGE!!!
She gave birth to about 12 fry last week, but shes still carrying more fry, I can still see a huge gravid spot.
Her scales are very slightly beginning to protrude from her body.
Could it be shes just so big that this is happening, or is it flukes?
Otherwise she appears fine.

The water params are fine.
I began treating the tank with mela/pimafix, is there anything else I could do?

If her scales are beginning to protude/pine cone, its a major sign of dropsy im afraid. Female livebearers will somtimes get dropsy if they have a large amount of fry in them that is pushing them to their limits and it will often disapear after they have given birth but this is still a very hard to treat desease and top notch water quality conditions and a high vegetable based diet(like cooked de-shelled peas and algae wafers and blanched cucumber) is needed.
Keep doing 20% water changes with dechlorinator in the tank everyday to help ease her condition and encourage her to give birth and try not to feed her too much but to feed her lots of vegetable based foods.

heh.
I meant to say dropsy....oops.
Anyways.
thanks Tokis!
I just did a water change before I read your reply, I will continue to do one each day for the next little while, 2-3 days and see what happens.

thanks again!

I just got back from the beach.
OUCH...Im as red as a lobster!

Anyways, I checked on her as soon as I got home and she doesnt look so good.
Her rear "end" is protruding and shes really really big, her scales dont look like they're protruding anymore than they were earlier though.

:(

She's been my most prolific breeding female yet, I really dont want to lose her.

:/

When her rear end looks like its protruding, does it look inflamed or red looking? Does her gravid spot look normal i.e dark and not red?

Her gravid spot is still very black, but where the fry actually come out its quite white in color.
What I mean is theres a small white spot between her fry and the delivery "hole"
And that spot is what is protruding outwards ALOT.
LOLOL
(I dont know what its called)

She's not hemmoraging or Infected looking around her anal fin.
It's just sticking out more than normal.
you know when they're so full and just before they deliver they tend to "buldge" out down there?
Thats what it looks like, just alot more than I've ever seen before.
It could be just because she's so huge, and I think Tokis-Phoenix is right about dropsy in females when they get huge before birthing.
Her scales are sticking outwards.
Otherwise she looks completely normal, and acting normal as well.
:/

Dunno, kinda stumped here.

On a good note, One of my platy's just gave birth too about 20 fry the other day and is recovering just fine, the babies are doing well too. :D

Oh yea.
She is actually in a 5 gallon CPR tank I use for these purposes, I do have her in a breeding trap though, to catch the lil fry.
I probably should remove her from the trap to reduce stress though.
The water params are good.
And I have added salt to the tank.

:D
