My female white mickey mouse Platy is very pregnant, like about ready to pop pregnant. She'll give all of the signs of wanting to give birth so I move her into the breeding tank (5g) and she seems fine for awhile then acts really stressed, Her belly gets really red and the gravid spots disapear. But there are no babies and shes as big as ever. So I put her back in the main tank so shes not stressed and by the next day the gravid spots are back, darker then ever and she seems perfectly happy. Shes done this twice already in the past week or so and still no babies. What do you think is going on with her? :/

well maybe she doesnt know how to get the babies out or either she has to many of them that she has no choice but to abort them. What I think is she might be getting dropsy or swimbladder so watch her closely

in the pic it looks like her belly is pink and there is no gravid spot so maybe she has some type of disease or something!

That is what my guppy did and she still has not given birth so maybe she gives birth in the breeder when you are not looking or there and then she eats them becuase that can happen becuase parents do eat their own fish becuase that is what happened to me one time! I had a pregnant fish and i cam home and she was skinny and there were babies and then the next day she was fat and had the grvid spot and then there were no babies! So keep an eye on that as well!

Thanks!
Hope i was of some help!

As a newby to fish, to my surprise I have been extremely successful in breeding guppies, so much so my tank at times has been like fish soup. I have now bought some larger "baby eaters" to keep the numbers down. Platy breeding is much the same as guppies and I cannot help but feel and having read the literature on this site, that moving the platy around just before birth is not good. Just trying to catch them causes them so much stress, you would need to do it long before they give birth. My babies survive so well as the tank is 90litres and has large holey rocks and plants in which they can hide and the water is a little warmer than the "average". I also feed the fish several times a day so they don't feel like snacking on their babies. Which means that nitrate levels can get high, requiring more water changes. Before I bought the "baby eaters" I had been selling around 20 fish every 4 weeks back to the fish shop from just 3 breeding females! The holey rocks are great for all the fish and creatures in the tank, I would really recommend them. Even with the baby eaters in place I still have babies, just not swams and swams of them.

Good luck. C1

It is not a disease, fry turn in the parents stomach. the reason most livebearers prolong their pregnancy is because they are under stress. Have you added any new fish recently? high params? aggressive fish biting her? etc.

Anyways, there are babies there, you can see their cute, BIG, eyes! k, she is due ANY DAY NOW , so BE PREPARED!!!! good luck :D

is it possible she was bred with a male swordtail. Because I heard if a female platy was bred with a male sword they may have problems having their fry since having the male sword's semen may make her babies larger than normal platy fries.

By the way, very noob question here. how do they abort? what happens to their babies in their stomach?

I hope so too. Good luck on her and share your experiences with her to us ;)
