have a 60l community tank. In it are 4 female guppies, 2 I have had for a few weeks and 2 I got on the weekend. I think both of the older females are pregant and one og the new ones has a very dark gravid (sp) spot too. I am slightly concerned I am going to be over run with fry one day.

If I were to let them give birth in the community tank would I expect many to survive? If so will local pet shops take them?

The other tank mates are 3 Male Guppies, 2 Platies Males I think, 4 neon tetras, 3 zebra danoes and a shrimp.

Thanks

Claire

your neon's and zebra's would eat about 90% of the fry and the odd one will surive.

Shop usualy dont pay, byt swap for credit or goods and that,

EVery one else will eat them but in my experience, guppies mouths are to small to eat their own fry!

I've seen Guppies eat their own fry, but you're right about the size of their mouths. Their fry grow up pretty fast so if they don't get eaten within the first week, it does get rather difficult for the Guppies to eat them.

Thanks for the answers. I think the one females, may be two, must have give birth she has no gravid spot like she did before but no sign of any fry, Im not too worried as I could end up with a very over stocked tank.

Yer, you shud be ok. Guppies will eat their own fry, and any other fish will too. Gouramies, Kribensis etc will eat them up to about 1cm long in my experience. Like the others said, unless you have a thick matt of plants on the surface for the fry to hide over (not under, on top of) then most will get eaten. If you are lucky then 3 from each female will survive, and even then they will simply replace any other guppies that die through age or disease.
