can anybody tell me what a powerhead is and what are its advantages and disadvantages? thanks guys

It's basically a souped up filter that creates a current under water or can be used for making a waterfall above water. It's benefits are mainly for fast-water fish who prefer currents or for outdoor ponds for making water falls. Usually it's impractical to have one set up as a waterfall in an aquarium.

The obvious disadvantage is to fish that prefer slow or stagnant moving water.

And they have attachments for actual filtration as well but most of the ones I've seen used are as current or waterfall creaters. Most of the time there are other more practical filters to use instead of a powerhead as a filter.

They provide extra water movement, great for all but the mentioned stagnant tanks. Having more water movement helps keep the tank cleaner by suspending debris longer, increasing the chances of it being picked up by the filter. Sand substrate and good water movement means no more vacuuming!
