As there`s a fair bit of rock in my 389L Tanganyika setup, I was wondering if using a powerhead would be a better option for helping to remove the waste rather than removing the rock every time I want to do a wc and substrate clean? If so, what kind of size/W would be best?

If the tank is heavily rocked it will help keep the crap off the bottom. Eventually you'll have to remove the rock but no nearly as often. I like the Koralia powerheads. the move alot of water and the flow is much wider than most powerheads. for your size tank I would look at the 3 or 4. the new ones could be listed in GPH. i think its 800 and 1200 GPH. the newer models have more flow and use less energy to run.

Thanks lalo,

The tank has a fair bit of Ocean rock but the middle has clear open swimming space so I guess it`s not 'heavily rocked', there`s a fair bit though.

I`m happy to be moving the rock at times as it helps with the building of territories, but on a weekly basis I don`t really want to be moving the rock around just to keep the bottom clean if I can really help it

I`ve just been reading a bit on the Koralia powerheads and for my size tank it`s recommended that the Koralia 4000 would be the best one?? I don`t want a powerhead that will blow my Tangs around, they didn`t seem to like the current from my FX5 too much at first :/

Just been looking on the Hydor site and I'm a little surprised it suggests the Evolution 4000 for your tank, EliseW, as that will be 10x water turnover, which is in the ballpark for my riverine fish!

Given your Tangs dislike for the standard ~2000lph output from the FX5 (which you turned down using the flow adjuster the other week), maybe a powerhead with <1500lph might work best? With a play about with its positioning and angle, the more gentle current ought to be able to waft debris towards the FX5 in-pipe.

I have a Koralia 1 (1500lph) running in my Rio240, which if you wanted to give a trial for ~month to see if it did the job, I'm happy to let you try (I can always set up the Bioflow 1500 pump as a powerhead again). All it will cost you is a visit to see the Glassfish and your Tang setup ;)

However, you might want to come up this way, as Aquajardin have some amazing Rice Fish in stock... http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=th&u=http://aqua.c1ub.net/forum/lite.php%3Ftopic%3D109740.0&ei=0VUQTaSHKIiahQf-2JG3Dg&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CEEQ7gEwBQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3DOryzias%2Bneon%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1899%26bih%3D1027%26prmd%3Divns (even this pic does not do them justice, the males are amazing)

I never listen to the maufacturers suggestions. They are usually way off. How long is the tank? A 6 ft tank could use the 1400. Its not too much for the sized tank with rock in it. These are not the typical jet flows you see. Its a much broader flow coming out of the powerhead. Otherwise try the next size down if you feel its too much flow.

Thanks Goat, really appreciate the offer :good:

At the moment I`ve been told I`m not allowed to buy any more fish (we`ll see how long that lasts though :hey:  ) so I`ll have to give Aquajardin a miss unfortunately, I like the look of those rice fish though

You`d be welcome to pop over to see the Glassfish and Tang setup, (once Christmas and New Year are out of the way and the busyness of this place is over with) nothing to do with the powerhead either but because I know you`d like to see how the Glassfish are doing :good:

Great stuff! Let's sort something out after the mayhem of the next couple of weeks is over with and let me know nearer the time if you want to loan the Koralia1 powerhead, to see if something with a low turnover will do the job of wafting the rubbish from around the rocks and into the in-pipe.

If you see any Upside Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris) in your local MA or other stores, I'd really appreciate a "heads up." My new three have been great fun to watch, playing in the 620T and I wish I had bought some sooner, when I could have got a 6+ group!

There are some upside down catfish in the fish shop in the Dolphin centre in Poole at the moment, my only concern would be that it's not the best fish shop by the way they keep the fish

Will let you know if I see any anywhere else though :)

a couple of small ones round the back of the rocks may be better than a larger one. i actually have a little nano koralia ive never used.

tank looks better aswell now you have a sandy bed for the shellies. i was gonna mention it bu youd spent ages building you stack lol.

Well they all seem very happy with the way the tank is setup now, I just want to get the waste situation sorted without upsetting the flow of it all. Will have to do a bit of reading I think.

Thanks Goat, was a quick reply earlier as I was on my way out. Thanks for the offer and we`ll definately catch up after the mayhem :good:

The nano does a good job, I recently just sold mine because it was way to powerful in the 95ltr/20gall, Warehouse Aquatics do them :good:

Just googled on the nano koralia as you`ve both mentioned it. Not sure if I`d need to look at 900, 1600 or as Goat says, 1500lph
