hi.

The area i live in is facing a power outage since 5 A.M.
I have 3 tanks around the house and i am worried about my fish.
My question is how long can the bacteria last with the filters off?
And how long will the fish be able to hold on?
The power company has no ideia when they will be able to restore power.

The filters should be fine for a good few hours. I have been reading around about this yesterday and it seems to be a topic of much debate.
If it gets really hot later I would make sure that the tops are open to stop overheating. Don't feed them today and reduce feeding for the next few days after power is restored.
Battery air pumps can be useful but don't know if many places stock them.
Good luck and hope your power comes back soon.

My son has quite often forgotten to turn his filter back on after feeding his catfish and not noticed until the next day and everything's been fine as soon as they're switched on again; no ammonia or nitrite spikes or anythng like that, so if your power's out for less than 24 hours or so you shouldn't need to worry at all :good:

Thanks for the Help.

I was without power for 13 hours streched between an 11 hour period during the day and another 2 hour one later at night.
Some underground cable malfunctioned and it took them forever to restore power.
I was working most of the day so i was not able to monitor the tank most of the time but by the end of the day all the fish seemed to be ok. The temperature did not go down, yesterday was one of those rare hot days in London.
I am still worried that my cycle might have been compromised so i'll do water tests for a couple of days to make sure and in case something seems wrong increase the water changes.
