We've got a power cut here (i'm running a laptop from a UPS so i can still get online). My fish are ok cos i've got the pumps hooked up to the ups as well, but my girlfriends tank at home doesn't have any other power source. As she's running under gravel filters, how long will it be before not having power to the air pumps start causing problems with the water? Thanks

I've gone for over 5 hours with no problems. Just have her stir up the water every hour or so. Also, if it becomes an extended outage, have her cover the tank with a blanket to help keep it warm, as well as float bottles of warm/hot water to keep the temperature up.

Well UGF's have no bacteria in them if she has no real filter then all her bacteria will be in the gravel. Whats a UPS? With your tanks if the UPS (whatever that is) stops working you will need to pour tank water into the filters every half an hour and scoop tank water out of the tank and pour it back in a few times every half hour for oxygen.

I think UPS is in reference to the Uninterruptible Power Supply that their laptop is running on. ;)

SDS> I take it your girlfriend's tank is quite small with it using a UGF. I'd always turn off the lights (so they don't come on all of a sudden and cover the tank with a blanket to keep the heat from escaping.

Thanks for the responses guys :) I've got power back on now, although she doesn't yet, so hopfully her power will be restored soon. A UPS is basically battery back up for a computer btw :) Her tank is about 15 - 20 gallons hence the UGF.
