Power Back-ups.

What does anyone do in the event of a prolonged power cut?

We use some form of "UPS" system for the computers at work but as far as I know (and not being a geek, that's not very far ), that doesn't give you a great deal of time, just enough to save whatever you're on with and then shut down. Other a generator sat outside with some form of sensor plugged in and waiting, which isn't really a viable option, are there any systems available or am I looking at making something out of heavy duty 12V batteries, an inverter and some form of power sensor?

hi,
the ups r good for about 2-3hrs mayb more depending on size of ups and what u run off it.
but an small inverter 600w alot cheaper
