Always wondered why fish open their mouths wide every now and again.
I always think they're blowing me a kiss (stupid thought i know) but can't seem to get a proper answer from Google.
They're not gasing for air as such, just every now and again, they open their mouths really wide for a second.
Can anyone help me or i won't sleep tonight!

I've heard it referred to as yawning but not sure if that is it either. I'd also like to know :)

I always thought that they were thirsty so they opened there mouths to drink. It is probably some other reason, but i like what you thought. Blowing a kiss:)

I have seen the same behavior in most animals when they yawn. I have even seen my pet snake do it. Why wouldn't fish yawn too?

Good point!
Always wondered what it was. I know it's not my water etc as it's spotless but a lot of them always seem to do it when I'm watching them for a while.
Maybe I'm boring them with all my talk of how beautiful they look!!

We yawn due to lack of oxygen or so they say. Am fairly sure it's the same with fish. Large breath to increase oxygen.

Well, could be a yawn. Could be stretching, or just a really good burp.
