i don't know what is better. should i remove the pots the plants come in or leave them as they are? is there any benefit to either?

There are pros and cons both ways. If you leave it in the pot, then it is relatively easy to move it around, and if you have fish that dig up the substrate, it's the way to go. If you don't have fish that dig, i suggest you take them out of the pots and reomve as much of the rockwool from the roots as possible, then plant them directly in the substrate so the roots can roam.

Agreed. Unless you have a specific reason for leaving the plant potted, it is better off removed and planted in the substrate.

As a bonus, you will often find that a "potted plant", once you remove all the rock wool, is actually more than one plant.
