Potted Plants surviving without substrate

I want to put a bunch of potted plants in my fry tank since they stay on the bottom without gravel and they will hide my fry from preg females i put in occasionally. The question is: will they survive without substrate?

Are the potted or free rooted? If they are potted then yes, they'll survive quite happily, my old tank had potted plants only (as my fish kept digging up the planted plants.

Free-rooted plants may survive, but won't do particularly well.
