I have noticed that placing garden teracotta pots into the aquarium is quite a popular thing to do and it would really serve as a good hiding place for some of my fish or even a good place to spawn. So I was wondering what kind of pots are safe in the water and which are not?

My dad handed me an old teracotta pot but I'm reluctant to use it as I'm not sure it's completely safe to use in the aquarium and the soil used in it cannot be removed even with boiled water!

Mark.

teracotta pots are safe and inert :good: I would recommend getting a new one as an old one could have had ferts, pesticides and other unwanted chemicals, they're really cheap anyway and the GBRs would appreciate them.

I droped mine in to a jug of freshly boiled water and left it to soak till it was cool enough to put my fingers in and then scrubed it with an old washed toothbrush. It came up lovely!

Like they stated above, terracotta pots are safe. They make great hiding spots for the fish and since they are inert, there's nothing to worry about. I would be leery about any used pots as well since you can't be sure it's chemical free. If you can find them cheaply, that is the best way. I good basic scrub down with water is all you need to do.

Terracotta pots are fine in the tank,

You'd be best with small ones if you want to use them for hiding spaces, small pots can be bought new for 25p from craft stores such as hobbycraft :good:
