Hi,

I already have the potassium manganate, but because last time I already had snails I don't know how effective it is. When I asked the questions of ridding snails from plants before people suggested Iced water.

Anybody got plants and no snails?? Which method do you thinks best?

I'll start making ice cubes tonight just incase!!

Thanks,
Sam

this is another question houndour and by no means an answer to your snail woes, but i noticed that when i place snails from my tank and place it into a hi salt concentration water bath mixture thingie they shrivel up and well die? do you think plants would mind a high salt content bath ? high in salt and i mean high ! around 1 spoonfull for a small roughly 1/4 a cup of water

I never thought of salt. Does anyone have an answer for this?

If I was to use salt then I'd have to rinse them thoroughly as I'm having corys and they don't tolerate salt.

I'm so determined not to get snails. I had millions last time and they really polluted my water.

Maybe I can ice/potassium manganate then salt the plants :S Maybe I'd kill them though.

oh and I've found the proper term....potassium permanganate (KMnO3)

not manganate as I've been saying.

edit...

the above website also recommends potassium permanganate.

Anyone know how long I should dip them? The above implies a couple of hours, but I vaguely remember being told 5 minites.

I used to be plagued by them - removing 20 a day. Then I bought a pair of Botia striata, didn't feed them for a while and they soon dissapeared. I still see the odd snail or two but it's no problem, a few are helpful.

I'm not sure about chemicals - I'm a fan of more natural pest control.

Well I'm a girl and I'm squeamish about snails. People say they crush them with their fingers! I can't do that!! When I was plagued I could only get to them with a net so could only get the ones on the glass.

Plants should be arriving today (hoping my boyfriend will be home early enough to go pick them up from post office). Then finally my tank will see some action :D

I had loads of snails before I added my clowns to the tank. They love them.

thinking about it - where can I get some more? (save on fish food :) :hey:

I don't recommend crushing anything with your bare fingers, you may have a nasty surprise. Some inverts are extremely toxic, and you may end up quite ill. Salt will also rupture the cell walls in most plants. Loaches, snail traps, and veggies are the way to go.

if you have an extra 5 gallon or more, you can get one dwarf puffer and move everything else out for a few days. no more snails, and you have another fish
:D

I don't see the problem with snails. If they are eating your plants, it means they are not healthy. Healthy plants secrete substances that make them inedible to snails and most fish.
