About three weeks ago we got two females for our male platy (he was looking stressed out all by himself) and it seems like only a couple days afterwards we noticed the females getting a little bit bigger. Over the course of the next week, the females got a lot bigger, we figured they are pregnant. They looked like balloons from the front! About two weeks after displaying first signs of pregnancy, both of the females looked unexpectedly skinny one morning; we actually thought they gave brith, but couldn't see any fry. By the next morning, though, the grils looked round again! So, in the past week, they were looking more and more round. However, we couldn't see a gravid spot developing, not at all, they looked the same color as they always have been... This morning one of the girls was a perfectly normally shaped fish, no round belly at all. The other girl is still fat, though. What's going on? Are the fish even pregnant or are they having digestive problems or something?

Another thing we noticed is white poo in the past two weeks. We tried feeding them peas, to no avail. Could that be internal parasites that make the girl platies look pregnant? Please help solve the Puzzle of the Possibly Pregnant Platies!

Water stats: pH--7.2, ammonia--0, nitrites--0, nitrates--~20, temperature--76

Fry are good at hiding in gravel, plants & under wood etc. You would normally see a black area (gravid spot) but this is not always the case. I believe it can happen where they have a few fry then the rest a few days later.

If they were pregnant when you got them they may have aborted/re-absorbed the fry. Whatch out for signs of the giving birth in 4-5 weeks.

Keep a close watch in the tank for fry over then next couple of weeks as they may not show themselves for 2-3 weeks. Pay most attention early mornings & late evenings.

It could just be that they were constipated from a change of diet.

hi,
stringy white poo is possable internal parasites,
if they are still passing this you may need to treat them.
