I didnt know where to ask this but it involves both african and new world, can a jewel and a convict co-exist in a 20 gallon? Its just a question, its just been on my mind.

If you had two pairs, you would have world war three in your tank!

A single specimen of each species could work, but jewels are very aggressive, so the con may be in danger. Be sure to add as many rocks and caves as possible if you do have the tank set up this way ;)

I thought mixing the two was a big no no!? I also think a 20 is small, but don't quote me on that. Maybe if you went bigger with the set up that Dwarfs said.

Mixing Africans from the Rift Lakes is a big no-no, but cichlids from the eastern rivers of Africa tend to be very similar to new world fish, and can be mixed safely in many situations.

A breeding convict is one thing, but if you stick a single convict and a jewel in anything but a large tank, the jewel will have the con for lunch.

I've said it before, i'll say it again... and again. Cichlid do NOT like each other. Why would you force two cichlids into a tiny tank where one is inevitably going to live a life of constant stress, unless it's killed outright.

Sorry Frank, didn't mean to be so aggressive, but it keeps coming up over and over.

It's truly amazing what is possible to do, given a big enough tank, but in smaller tanks the only appropriate way to keep cichlids is in breeding pairs/harems/colonies (depending on what cichlids it is)

Mixing new worlds in africans is generally a bad idea unless you are taking like kribensis and docile new worlds in a large tank. I wouldn't attempt it unless you enjoy chaos and destruction (which maybe you do then by all means go ahead).

:/ Actually in a bigger tank jewels and cons can exist peacefully, somewhat, sev. Freddyk its ok, thank you for saying that tho most people rant and just leave it be.
