Hi guys i just wanted a bit of advice about my betta. I've had to take him out of my existing tank today because he got teritorial when i added some male guppies. I know this wasn't the best idea but he's always been placid and when i bought him a few weeks back he was already living with guppies so i thought he'd be ok with them.
So I am buying a new tank for him in the morning but he's going to be the first fish in the tank so it's gonna be "his" tank.
What i want to know is there gonna be anything suitable to keep with him or is he gonna become too teritorial on his own to be able to add anything to the tank at a later date?
Thanks for any advice you can give me guys

Well that depends on what size tank. Bettas get along famously with Dwarf Frogs, and some can peacefully share their space with a snail (those wiggly eye stocks sometimes tempt bettas into 'picking' at the snails). Some people have success with tetras, but they can get nippy, espescially when kept in schools of less than 6. It depends heavily on the personality of the betta... some like seafood more than others

Before adding the guppies he got on well with my tetra and copper harlequins, as well as my ottocinclus. The only time there was ever a problem was when one of the tetra accidentally nipped him during feeding time. I'm just worried that he's gonna be too possessive if he's the first fish in the tank and attack whatever i add.
Saying that he doesn't flare, or at least i've not seen him flare, and he doesn't attack his own image much, so i'd say he has a fairly peaceful nature

I have my male Betta in a tank with copper Harlequins to, no probs reported there, I have one Neon tetra that was donated, 3 panda corys and 2 yoyo loaches also.

I am thinking about adding some Endlers guppies as i'm told they will be fine....

Then again my LFS had a male Betta in with 3 females...hmmmm

Yeah the stockist where i've bought all my fish from was keeping my veiltail in with guppies and they were happy together but when i tried it it was a complete disaster, they didn't manage to live together for 24 hours before i had to take him out.
I know he's previously been ok with harlequins and tetra so am thinking i'll try that again, plus if he gets too teritorial in the new tank I can rehome small fish easily in my other tank and donating them to a friend.

Also i'm getting some Melafix to try and heal up the injured guppy but I was thinking of adding some to the tank with the betta in case there's any damage to his fins i've not noticed but i read it can be harmful to betta, is this the case?

my betta lived with ghost shrimp, he ate 2 of them but lived with the last one for about 6 months. I now have a cherry shrimp in with him and they seem to be getting along alright.

I did have him with 2 neon tetras, he chased them for about the first hour or so when i put them in then he gave up. then a few weeks later they started fin nipping him and he in return started chasing them again. so i ended up separating them

I've heard that Melafix can be dangerous also, its all about getting the dosage right due to their air hole... I added my Betta last to the tank so maybe thats why he is quite calm, he seems to swim amongst everyone really.

I'd love to get some female Bettas but they are a no no.... even though the LFS has male/female together
