Hey there, was wondering if anyone might be able to help with this.

Curious to know if anyone here has ever had the experience of inheriting an aquarium to find that the water heater that came with it was missing a thermostat? And if so whether or not this is a reason to be concerned?

Reason I'm asking is because this has been my family's recent experience. We inherited three tropical fish from a family friend who had to give them away under emergency circumstances just 5 days ago - and have noticed this is the case with the main heating device that came included with the tank. As it also has a back up heater that does come with a thermostat - this isn't a problem right now. But we were still wondering whether or not we should consider replacing the main heater with a new one with a thermostat included - or, if it's not possible to buy these seperately, replace the tank and all it's equipment altogether. I've been feeling this is something we should look into, but at the same time - being very much a newbie to fish caring - am appreciating we could be worrying ourselves over nothing so would be very grateful to hear any opinions/advice anyone else here might want to share.

Many thanks in advance for reading!

If I were you I'd just replace the heater.....no need to replace anything else just I think it's a bit dodgy to have a heater without a thermostat. I didn't know you could still get them lol!

lol I get the idea you're far from being the only one who didn't realise that! Both the people my dad talked to weren't aware that could happen either - and as far as I know they're fairly experienced at looking after tropical fish. I'm getting the feeling this equipment's must be pretty old and maybe that's why - as know the previous owner had it for some time though not sure exactly how long.

Many thanks for the advice, much appreciated! It's really helpful to hear somebody else's point of view as now I know I wasn't over reacting in being concerned. In that case, will start looking into replacement possibilities. Thanks again!

Yeah don't worry they're not expensive either, you can get a good one for £10-£15 online. Search Charter House Aquatics, they've got a good range.
