The fish that I have in my tank are listed in my signiture. The problems I am having are only in my mollies, whom I obtained over 8 months ago from my neighbor. Everything was fine until I went away for a week and left my husband to tend the tank. He misunderstood my directions and really overfed my fish, so I had a nitrate spike (but no detectable nitrite). Only the mollies seemed to have issues with this. One molly looked like it had some ich on the back fin so I raised the temp to 82 degrees. The spots went away. No fish ever got spots. To date I haven't added any medication. It has now been over a month.
My neighbor's tank is prestine but the mollies are very inbred. I was given one large, older molly (yellow and white), and 1 black and white female that has grown to a medium size, two black and whites that wont grow, and two yellow and whites that wont grow. They actively breed, but no babies. We assume they are sterile from inbreeding over so many generations.
The large orange and white has been developing this "pimple" on her side for months, and it keeps getting bigger but doesnt bother her. Now it's really big! Her and the other yellow and white ones are also developing these orange tumor-looking things on their bodies. The black and white ones never seem to develop this - just the yellow and white ones. It doesnt seem to bother them but it does get insightly. My neighbor has had the same problem with his orange and white, but never black and white.
So today I do a small waterchange...
Now, I've been noticing that most of my mollies are getting lethargic and on some of them they are clamping the back fins just a little bit (some do it, some dont). It's almost like sometimes they can only swim with their front fins and not their back fin. I'm thinking internal parasite, maybe affecting the swim bladder a little bit? I just noticed that one of the black and white mollies seems to have one eye bigger than the other (popeye?).
With all the issues I've been having with these mollies I'm wondering if I should just euthanize them and then treat my tank for internal paracites before my other fish start getting sick, or if I should just treat everyone? Right now out of all my mollies, only my small black and white male seems to be vibrant and healthy. I guess just looking at my tank the fish arent acting too bad, but I've been watching these fish for months and am definitely noticing a decline in their behavior.
My other fish have been so healthy that I really dont want to risk loosing all my fish, but I'm fond of my mollies.
Two photos:
Notice the big pimple-like thing on the one molly and the orange on the smaller one. The older these fish get the more the orange seems to have a different texture than the rest of the fish.
The other picture shows my larger black and white molly...she was always my favourite
.
As I type this, the black and white tiny molly that looks to have popeye(?) is laying in my breeder net...she's lifeless unless another fish comes by, then she swims a little.
Thanks for your help in advanve....
