would some of these work. I know not all at the same time. I got sizes & names from fishbase.org. planing on having tank set up by christmas. but figure gouramis will have to wait till after newyears. also if any other fish would also work pleas let me know. also would I mix females? & not worry about the agression.

Trichopsis Pumila - Pygmy or Sparkling Gourami as I know them, are small but such a delightful addition to a tank. I have a group of 8 and they are fascinating fish to watch, not to mentions exquisitely coloured. I find it impossible to sex the tiny fish so not sure about numbers ratios. It makes me jump when I hear a croak every now and then though

Honey gourami are also lovely fish and best kept at least in a pair, if not several females to each male.

That's the only ones on your list I have any experience with so far :D

setting the tank up now, hopefullying planting this week. so probably will be getting fish somewhere around christmas & newyears. will be doing a fishless cycle & will be using a matured bio-wheel. so hopefully everything will be set up & fish ready by at least christmas. I am thinking of going with 2 or 3" & smaller. I tend to like smaller & more colorful fish. it sounds funny me saying that since I have cichlids......lol

I'm the same tbh. Smaller fish have always fascinated me :D

I can heartily recommend the honeys and the sparklers (even though they are quite small). I had some red robin honeys too which are lovely fish, slightly different body shape to the honeys but around the same size if not a little larger. They are all great fish and I love their noseyness...they all come up to the front of the tank whenever I'm there :D

Mine weren't like that. They have the same name as the honeys Colisia Chuna spHere. Better pic here.

Not much help, but it is just a red version of the honey gourami. Just looks like a very embarrassed version

Dwarf puffers are brill...small, odd and such personalities :D

ok, cool fish, but kinda worried about getting dwarfs do to I would be getting them from petsmart or petco more then likely. only have another LFS that is not a chain store. so I am concerned about the health of the fish. the other LFS is called Northside Aquatics. NSAquatics.com

I have 3 of the sparkling gouramis, very cute n pretty, form what i have read i have 1 male n 2 females, but not 100% sure. i have never heard mine croak, it is only them in the tank is it cause there arnt enough? or they just quiet?

p.s. sorry for hijacking.

I have a banded gourami who is absolutely lovely. A bit camera shy, but comes out quite happily as long as I'm not pointing a lens at him. Seems quite hardy, has survived a recent infection outbreak which killed off half my fish.
Also fond of my sparkling gouramis. They do croak quite a lot, I suspect they're all males and get a bit territorial with each other first thing in the morning.

There's nothing wrong with your sparklers if they don't croak, just means they haven't had any disputes yet, or they have croaked and you just haven't heard them  It's kinda like a 'whatwasthat' noise :hyper:

The pic of the red striped fish? I have no idea what that is tbh, but it's nice :D I'll see if I can find out though :D
