Hi All,

I am not sure if this is just a case of fish bullying each other or finrot. My wife bought me some fish at the weekend 3 Golden Sucking Loach and 5 Serpae Tetra. Unfortunately instead of putting them into the qurantine tank she put them straight into the tank, apparently after getting the bag acclimatised and then adding a little water to the open bag she then netted the fish and put them in the main tank. After nearly dying from shock at what she had done, all that time and effort trying to persuade her to let me get the QT in the first place. Sorry I should point out that my wife has no interest at all in the fish, it was our wedding anniversary and she couldn't think of what else to get me. All the fish seemed to be O.K they were all getting along famously on Sunday. However I have just been watching them and 3 of the Serpae Tetra have damage to their fins and also 2 of my neons and 1 of the Danios are displaying the same sort of damage to their fins. The serpae tetra do seem to be being a bit aggresive towards each other. Here is a photo of one the S/Tetras.

What do you think?

Definitely seems to be finrot as none of those fish you talked about are rather agressive unless you're keeping them in a tank that is too small. (Even so, they wouldn't do that type of damage, especially that severe) Also, a tell-tale sign is the white/gray color on the damaged parts of the fins. Fin rot is easy to treat and you can buy medication at your LFS. Just be sure to remove any activated carbon from your filter (It removes the medication making treatment ineffective) while treating and follow the instructions closely. Most loaches are extremely sensitive to medications/chemicals of any kind as most species have no scales and absorb them readily through their skin, so 50%-75% dosage may stress them out less and can still get the job done (just takes a bit longer). Treating the entire tank is really your safest bet as fin rot is EXTREMELY contagious. I had a case where my entire tank was infected with fin rot within 24-36 hrs. Good luck with your treatment! I hope your fish do okay!

For bacterial finrot you need strong bacterial med, primafix and melafix are no good for bacterial finrot.

luckely we can all share our opinions and experiences on this site
i didnt treat my tank with anything else so i have to believe my findings
if i did not treat the tank in the way i did, the disease would have advanced to the stage of killing the fish.
after treatment my cory got better and has rgenerated about 50% of the damaged fin so far.
