I have a friend with a friend that may have a 55 gal. aquarium for grabs. Don't know if he gave it away. Anyway, what could I put in it?

why does everyone else get free tanks and not me, this isnt fair

Very funny Discuslova Anyhow, I would love discus, but my water is hard. Does it help or hurt? Next, what kind of fish can they live with?

they like soft acidic. and it is better for a species tank. me and discuslova have talked a lot about this lol

 She doesn't!

Anyways, they can handle pretty much anything, although they like the softer more acidic waters. I know some people on this forum who keep Discus in the high 7 range of Ph!

What exactly is the Gh/Ph of your water? I have heard it's almost better to match the water that the Discus where raised in, rather then have it perfect (unless thats what they where raised and kept in.)

High 8.
What else can I get?

You still want Discus? If you have drift wood, and filter water through a bag of peat moss (easy to find all you need is to drain the water through it.) Then the Ph should be fine (resulting in something like 7.7 or 7.8.) Maybe a few Spotted puffers would work, although they are brackish, they make good "pet" fish and the Ph is good for them at 8.

For a 55g with hard water, check out the african cichlids - there are a TON of options there and the ones from Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika are from hard water regions.
