Hi, I am considering changing my 220l community to a Malawi tank. However, I'd like to keep my 7 lemon bristlenose. Are there any Malawi's that are compatible with bristlenose catfish? Also, could you suggest a stocking for the tank?

I'm thinking of Malawi's as something a bit different, as I have kept most community fish now.

BTW, the filtration is a Rena filstar xp2 and I have a 900lph powerhead as well.

cheers :good:

I would go with pseudotropheus strands...
Have a look at my link in my signature at my 240L Lake Malawi Tank. That stocking works great for me.
The main thing with stocking is numbers... I would either go 1 of each species or like 4-5 of each so nobody is targeted.

Hi if you want something a bit different have a look at a tanganyika setup 220 would be better suited to tangs than malawi.
The plecs would be fine with tangs as well. :good:

Mbuna will get on with bristlenoses. I have 4 Bns in my 450litre tank with loads of mbuna with no problems. The only thing I would say is make sure you dont add long finned Bns, their fins get shredded.

The malawi to go for would be Mbuna (kingsizeis, yellow labs, fellabornia, one of the afras, hongis etc..) These are all ones I have in my tank with no problems. I would also buy from private breeders as you will get better quality and also more fish for your money.

thanks for the replies! :good:

I have been given loads of advice from a Malawi forum and one of my dad's mates who has just turned his 8ft Malawi to marine. I have decided to buy 5 yellow lab juvi's, and when they are adult I'll select a breeding trio. My dad's mate suggested this, as it will be great to breed them, as I'm getting bored of the average shoaling fish. He's also said that I can have as much stone as I need (he used 1/2 a tonne in his 8ft Malawi). I've done loads of research on yellow labs, and Malawi's in general, and I think I'm good to go.

cheers :good:

I'm nearly sorted now.

I've decided that I'm going to stock the tank more than I first intended. I'm getting 6 yellow labs, 6 jalos and 6 mainganos.

I just need to buy the coral sand, pick up the rocks and buy the silicone on ebay, then I'm sorted!

I will be buying from a breeder, so the fish should be good quality!

cheers :good:

Sounds like someone has been busy and very organised, be nice to see when it's all done, good luck :good:

Thanks mate, I keep changing my mind on the stocking. I have decided now to get Afra cobue (I can't get jalos from the breeder I'm buying from). I'm only getting 3 though, as Only the dominant male colours up fully, so I might pick a trio of another species.

cheers :good:
