rite, bin down to my lfs to see wot they said about changing my rio400 to marine from tropical. i basicaly asked them wot i had to change and wot its going to cost this is wot they said:

another fluval 405 (even though i already have 2 fluval 305'5 £100
x2 big bags of sand £60
some ocean rock as not having live rock £50ish
protein skimmer £130
and big tub of salt £40

does this seen reasonable and is they anything else i should consider apart from fish?

many thanks
james

was also told my original lighting would be ok for fish

Hmm why no live rock? Isn't live rock the heart and soul of a healthy marine tank?

didnt want rock due to the expence of it an having to change lighting. i was told no rock was ok. sure oceon rock would lokk ok.

maybe add some in the future

are you planning on having corals? if so the external filters probably won't work. They create too much nitrate. You'd also need a water purifier (RO/DI unit). If it's fish only, you should be fine with those suggestions.

For live rock, you really don't need that much lighting. It's as much a porous bacteria surface as anything else.

not planning on coral, just ocean rock, how does a water purifier work(obiously purifies water)

wil it be ok with just my 2 fluval 305's or is more filteratio needed.

thanks for replies

james

2 305s will be fine, there just looking for another sale!!

You will need:
Appropriate Test Kits,
RO Unit
Skimmer
Salt
And all the other stuff you have.

looking at ro units on ebay, looks comlicated, how exactly do they work?
also would you recomend a particular skimmer the shop to me i would need a v2skim800 at £130

that's dumb. you already have oscars. why would you want to go marine?

Because oscars are crap....

I would get Live Rock, as far as I am aware you dont need special lighting for LR and it will filter your tank better then any External Filter... You got powerheads on your list?

IMO live rock is the best thing in a marine tank, you should really get it.

an RO/DI unit is just a filter setup that helps to remove impurities from the tap water (before you mix up your saltwater) such as copper and other metals, organic molecules, etc. that are especially harmful to corals. It can also help to keep algae down by removing nutrients it needs to grow.

Most boney fish will supposedly do fine without an RO/DI filter though.
