Hi Guys,

I have a bosemani rainbowfish that has been rather poorly for the last month or so, all started with some missing scales and pink patches on his sides. I have tried treating with melafix/pimafix and then last week treated with esha2000. Nothing seems to help and now he has got a bulging eye. He is eating well and is reasonably active, although I have noticed that he spend some time in the corner on his own.

Can anyone advise me further? Is it TB?

Thanks

Paul :D

I can't say it is not TB, but it is very rare. I also can't say it is TB. We need more information from you about your tank.
ammonia=
nitrites=
nitrates=
pH=
KH=
GH=
Other tank mates ?
How did you cycle?
Anything new in the tank?
Water change schedual?
How long has the tank been set up?

And anything else you can think of.

ammonia=0
nitrites=0
nitrates=5
pH=7.5
KH=2
GH=4
Other tank mates ? 13x Cardinal Tetra, 4x Boseman Rainbow, 1x Gold Spotted Plec
How did you cycle? Tank bought second had a year ago, immediate cycle.
Anything new in the tank? 10x malaysian trumpet snails
Water change schedual? Weekly 30%
How long has the tank been set up? Nearly a year

And anything else you can think of.

The affected rainbow I had when I bought the tank a year ago, the other 3 were bought prior to this problem. I did lose a red rainbow about 2 months before I bought the 3 other rainbows. He had stopped eating and lost alot of weight befor dieing. Also between that time I lost 5 dwarf neon rainbows for now apparent reason.

Thanks

Paul :)

Thankyou for the quick response with the water parameters! Now we can rule out water quality. Have you tried to treat it with any meds yet? What does his poo look like? Is it white or clear looking? Right now I'm leaning toward a bacterial infection. I see you are in the UK. I'm not sure what meds you have available to you, but I will do alittle research and see what I can come up with.

I've treated with Melafix/pimafix and more recently Esha2000. Poo I believe is looking quite normal. He looks a bit worse than in the pictures and they don't show the bulging eye.

Thanks

Paul :)

Sorry, just a few more questions... Are any of the other fish showing symptoms? Do the sores look like injuries or more like ulcers? Esha2000 was one I was looking at, but since you have tried it already, I will keep looking. I've used melafix and pimafix before with good results, but you have already tried this as well. I don't keep rainbows, but my nephew does and he had a similar problem a few months ago. His fish got better, but I can't remember what he used.

More questions. What is his diet like? Do you feed alot of bloodworms? From what I could find, ulcers are common in rainbows when they do not have enough plant matter in their diet and eat alot of bloodworms. I read several posts on other forums with others having the same problem. These are old posts from 5 years ago, but they suggest lots of large water changes, a change in diet to 90% veggie matter, and if things don't clear up, using an internal bacteria med soaked food. Wish I could be of more help.

Hi colleen,

No other fish are showing any symptoms at all looking very healthy, it just looks like missing scales on one side with pink/red where they were. On the other side they look like pink/red patches, not so much raised more like a rash.

His diet is mainly flake food, I do occasionally feed them frozen food such as bloodworms and other things.

Thanks again

Paul :)

I'd say any good quality veggie matter food would be good. As I said, I don't keep rainbows, but I've done alittle research on them for my nephew. The articles I read suggested a veggie food and regular flakes. 90% veggie matter 10% flakes. A spirulina flake or algea wafers would probably work.

Unfortunately the fish died :sad:

Thanks
