Yesterday I had to remove a platy from one of the tank ornaments that she had managed to get stuck inside....the edge of her tail fin was slightly ragged but otherwise she seemed OK (eating, swimming, chasing other fish)...I was however concerned about the tail fin and kept a close eye on it....
This morning I awoke to see her not looking too good, at the top of the tank . The tail fin seems to have gotten worse so its now no longer ragged but more flattened out...kinda like the ragged bits fell off or something. It is nearly to the point now where the tail attaches to the body (as in, her flesh)...so this morning I have set up my quar tank, with its cycled filter (I put carbon in it) plus a water change (quar tank)....this afternoon once the temp has stabilised and I am sure there is no nasties in the water, the carbon will come out.....meds and salt will go in and she will go in...
Fins crossed...
I feel so bad. The offending ornament was a castle with turrets that small fish could swim through (my tetras did it all the time)...the platy oviously decided to swim up through one of them and got stuck....once in there she had no way of getting out. I am thinking she was in there for upto 3 days (I wasn't too concerned as she is a shy fish and hides at the best of times...till the 3rd day when I went hunting for a dead fish).....
So I guess in a way this is a warning. The castle had been in the 2 months. So if you have anything the fish can get stuck in, don't think "Oh, it hasn't happened yet so it won't"....
Poor lttile girl...she is one of my original platies...she survived finrot before as well as a sever case of ich, she survived cycling (where nitrites got to 10ppm).....and all my newbie mistakes....
