60L tank

5 cherry tetras
2 dwarf gourami
8 baby platties
1 adult plattie

Water stats: Nitrite 50
Nitrate 0-5
other stats are normal

Problem: I noticed this morning that my mummy plattie was swimming a bit funny and when i fed the fish she didn't come up to eat just hid behind the filter, on closer inspection I have noticed that there is white lumps which look like bits of cotton wool around her mouth, Her colour has also faded quite dramatically. Any Ideas as to what this is and how to treat it? Also one of the cherry tetras was acting the same way but no white mouth.
Tank is 4 months old and i had an outbreak of neon tetra disease about 2 months ago but did whole water change etc after removing them could they of contaminated the other fish? The cherry tetras have only been in the tank 2 weeks.

Any advice much appreciated.

You have a nitrite reading water change.
Do you vac the gravel.
Whats is your tap nitrate reading.
Ntd can effect many fish I lost whole tank to it.

Swimming funny can be a symtom of ntd.
Is it a lump on the mouth or a spot.

Hi, I did a 50% water change last night and cleaned out the filter wich was clogged up with algae as well as cleaning all the rocks and plants. Have vacumed the gravel as well.
Here are my new readings:
NO3 50mg/l
NO2 0mg/l
GH >16od
KH 15od
PH 8.4
Tap nitrite is 0

Platy still not eating is now hiding under rock so can't get a picture has got white lumps around its lips they look like ulcers and have noticed his top fin is very ragged and looks like half is missing.

2 of the babies have bloated bellies and have thick green stringy poo coming out 1 of them is also keeping away from the other fish.

Any ideas whats wrong and what I can do?

Wow a mess isnt it.

Not usre if the ntd is still killing the fish to be honest.
Lumps on the mouth what colour are they, do they look hard or soft like filled with fluid.
Ulcers are pink or red with a circling of dead white skin around the edges.

Bloating can be constipation, swim bladder, dropsy to internal parasites.
Can the fish maintan its balance in the water.
Are scales sticking out
What do you feed your fish?
For bloating you can do epson salt baths to help draw the fluids out.
For constipation, you boil some frozen peas for a few minutes let cool down, pop out of shell, mush between fingers and add to the tank.

The green stringy poo have you been feeding veg.

o.k. managed to get a better look it looks like it's top lip has a chunk missing out of it and his bottom lip is clear/white, soft and lumpy not sure about balance but from what i saw this morning i would say no. scales on all fish are o.k.
I feed them tropical fish flakes. Have never fed them anything else. Bloated baby platy is staying in top corner of the tank not swimming around but is maintaining balance.
The way they are pooing i don't think its constipation.
what to do about mummy platy I fear the worst and that seh is on the way out.

Sounds like flexibactor columnaris false name mouth fungus.
Mouth rotted away and bleached out lips.
To many dried foods lead to constipation.
Need a variety of frozen foods and veg in there diet.

I would cook some peas.

For columnaris in the uk myxazin by waterlife or anti internal bacteria med by interpet, and pimafix which should be used with the myxazin or interpet med.

Wow thank you, you are clever! lfs are useless. I thought this would be an easy hobby! peas are cooking as we speak and will order the meds needed hope it's not too late for her and that she doesn't infect the other fish.

Not very clever to be honest, have more common sense which I would rather have.
Once the mouth rots its best to put the fish out of it's misery.
But thats up to you.
If you do decide to end the fish suffering I would preform a few daily water changes on your tank.
You could still use the anti internal bacteria med by interpet seen as some fish are ill.

yeah I know am thinking about it but its hard she's there mummy, don't like seeing her suffer though.

The baceria will keep eating away at the mouth that why you need to take action fast as the whole mouth can go.
I would rather swab the mouth like it says it that article as uk meds are not strong enough to nip it in the bud.
