Hi all,

I have 2x Cockatoo Cichlids. 1 male 1 female
They are both quite poorly.
About 3 weeks ago, I noticed 1 of my guppys and the female cichlids had problems with their dorsal fins (I think they are the dorsal fins...their tail's basically)
The guppy looked like it had been nipped or chewed. And the cichlid's tail started to turn into a point (spear like).
I done some reading and after I spoke to my LFS, it was decided that they had fin rot.
I was sole myxacin (I think that's how it's spent).
I removed the carbon sponges from both my filters. Carried out the treatment for 5 days, then put in new carbon filters.
The Guppy appears to be recovering well. I think the fin is starting to grow back (Stopped the treatment about 2 weeks ago).
But the female doesn't appear to have got better.
Now the male is starting to get the same symptoms. His tail is starting to point too.
Both have become like recluses. They are hiding all the time. Sometimes I lose them and only find them if I start moving ornaments.

I do 40% water change every week.
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 40ppm
PH 8.0
Temp 26 degrees.

Any advice? I;m worried I will lose both of them. All the other fish seem great.

Sorry, appear to have posted twice and don't know how to delete one.

Well. After doing a water change just now, took all of the ornaments out (Not seen the cichlids for a few days). I've found the male, but took everything out and the female has dissappeard. It's not anywhere...The male is really ill all his fins are jaged and the dorsal fin is pointed like a spear.
All the other fish are absolutley fine.
What should I do?
Should I cull this fish (Freezr)???

It probably killed the female and the other fish have eaten it. The female probably put up a good fight, i suggest leaving it and leave the lights off for a few nights. It might recover if its well enough.

Ripped fins are normally caused by water quality or aggression from other fish. Your water seems fine, so what are the other fish in the tank?

The tail is called the caudal fin, btw; the dorsal fin is the one that runs down the back ;)
