Poorly Betta

Im gonna get hold of some bacteria meds and try it, is it ok to dose the tank with the shrimp in?

i may have to put him in his own container maybe?

we tested the water and everything is perfect, the tank stays pretty stable and iwth the water changes doesnt

Check the meds dont contain copper which will harm the shrimp.
If you have a hospital tank it might be better to put him in there just incase.

just thought id psot an update, ive put him in a tank on his own (10g heavily filtered tank) and treated him with some meds i was recoomended to use. he seems to have perked up alot already, his finds are not soo droopy and i saw him flare for the first time in ages!

ill keep you posted! ive actually got a shipment on high end halfmoons that should be confirmed soon so i dont want to make these mistakes again (although im not sure what ive done wrong because the paremeters are perfect )

I disagree, the shrimp produce little to no waste, and the rasboras are about 1/3" long and dont grow hardly any bigger.

I thank you for your advice and i will be sure to try and get the stocking down, im not sure if im jsut gonna keep him in his own tank. ive got a coupla 4ft tanks that have been divided and siliconed into place, the tanks are being cycled atm, and all have plenty of plants. im currently working on some acrylic tanks to use as breedings tank that are around 8" tall.

he sounds as if he might be ok now, fingers crossed. If you see males stress stripe, unless juvies, it means they are really not well. I got a male from a local shop a couple of weeks ago he striped in the bag in the shop,never really settled and he was dead next day. whereas the girls seem to think stripes are attractive!

More the fact that 30 shrimp in just over a 6 gallon tanks is alot. Not much room for them at the bottom.

Your problem may well lie in the filter. A 450lph filter on a 30l tank gives you just over 15x circulation, WAY too much for a betta IMO. Bettas long fins can be torn by powerful flow, my guess is this is what has happened and septicaemia has set in to the torn fins. Probably the reason why he has not been flaring either.

I personally would only keep a betta and a nerite snail in that size tank.

Do you think i should put the original filter back in (the one that came with the tank?) its a 50 - 150lp/h?

the betta wont be going back into the original tank anyways. i think im going to keep him in his own tank untill i get the 4footers cycled.

ill post up some pics of the tank, msot of the shrimp are babies so thers not too much "traffic" lol

Make sure that whatever tank he is in, there is very little flow. I presume he is still in the 10g. That filter on the 10g (50-150) would probably be perfect. Where they are found in Thailand is puddles in rice paddy's. There will be very little if any flow. If you are having problems, cut a thin piece of sponge and place in a small piece of stocking / tights and elastic band it on to the output.

I had to do this on the filter I kept my last one with. Works pretty well. Ensure you are gravel vacing well as the reduced flow won't keep the tank as clean, but you will see him flare alot more and he will grow his fins back properly in no time. He should regain his colour and look generally alot healthier aswell.

What! They are not found in PUDDLES

The live in Paddy fields, canals and slow moving streams. The only time their water is restricted is during the dry season, and even then the "puddles", although shallow, are fairly large.

You had been giving good advise until you put that.

Not being funny, but yes technically it does matter as it gives out the wrong information to anyone who chooses to believe the "puddles" thing.

It comes up time and again from people who keep their bettas in a gallon of water, who then justify it by saying "they live in puddles". Thats why i pointed it out.

Just in reply, yes I wrote it technically wrong, being on morphine for the last 6 weeks can do that.

Don't like to argue, just want to make sure the fish ok.

I kept my betta on its own in the PFK aquacube for 2 1/2 yrs before he passed away in feb.
I would never advocate keeping them in small containers just wanted to get across that they really do not like the powerful flow of 15x circulation.
