I would like to change my 55 gallon over to sand. I've already changed two other tanks over -- one has black Tahitian Moon Sand and another has "play sand". The moon sand is nice - but I don't want black sand in the 55 gallon. The play sand is ok -- but it is a little too fine for my liking. I read the pinned topic on sand and it appears that pool filter sand is ok to use, so I just bought a 50 pound bag.

The pinned topic on sand mentioned that sharp sand should not be used. However, based on a weeks worth of research, all good pool filter sand is "angular" -- which is like being sharp. It's supposed to be that way. Once the grains become smooth and round (over time), it does not work as well (in a pool filter).

So, is "angular" sand ok to use in an aquarium? Most of the occupants are mid to upper level dwellers (congos). I do have one plec though...will he be ok? I rubbed the sand hard against my skin and it doesn't cut or scratch my skin. Actually, the gravel currently in the tank has pretty sharp edges....

I just want to be sure the pool sand is ok before I go through the effort of changing substrate.

I've used it for years in my 30's and had no trouble with it. I have bottom dwelling Cories, Kuhlis and snails and not a one of them has been damaged in any way by the sand.
