Pool Filter Sand Abrasive?

I am transferring my 2 Gymnothorax Tiles and GSP to a 55 gallon tank. I plan on using pool filter sand, instead of the gravel I am currently using.

Is pool filter sand too abrasive for the eels?

Also, will these eels burrow, now that I have sand? Or will I have to manually turn over the sand every water change?
