Hi

Can anyone give me some names of fish that create less waste than other fish, and so create less ammonia.

Or fish (small community) that are above average.

Fish I am interested in are

- Danios
- Platys
- Betta
- Coolie Loach
- Dwarf Gourami
- Ram
- Guppy
- Neons
- Harlequin Rasboras
- Tetras in general

Thanks
Andy.

I have harlequin rasboras, and pristella tetras and they don't produce much in the way of poo, neither does my betta, and he's a little piggy. I know plattys, guppys and all live bearers are poo machines. My dwarf gourami doesn't poo alot, but he's prone to constipation. Don't know about the other ones though.

There are some guidelines, but in general the amount of waste will be much more dependent upon environmental factors than species.

Firstly, the more mass a fish has, the more waste it will produce. Then, the more food it eats, the quality of the food it eats (e.g. fats versus proteins), the warmer the temperature (since its metaboism will run faster), the amount of activity it performs which is related to how much oxygen is available and taken up, probably how stressed the fish is, and most likely several more I am not listing. And of course, that list is pretty interdependent, that is, the quantity and quality of the food are not independent variables, for example.

Bignose has good info there. I havent seen anything that a khuli(coolie) loach has expelled out of any orifice. So they are clean.
