When you change a % of water in your tanks every week, is it wise to change a % in your pond a couple of times a year?

Obviously a pond is supposed to be its own eco-system and support itself. But as ponds are more commonly used to support high stocking levels of fish it is wise to clean the filter regularly and perform some water changes. I generally perform a few 20% water changes from time to time and often do a 50% water change at the end of summer and start of spring. This helps prepare the ponds for winter and get the ponds started in spring. Spring is when most pond problems can arise. :)
