This was breifly covered in the coldwater section and got me thinking.

Even though tanks are stocked alot heavier than ponds surely if we buy a highly over rated filter for the tank then it will work fine.

My LFS keeper has just moved his shop aorund and has a new 5ft tank which he's filtering using a Bio-force pond filter which is rated up to 500 gallons, and costs minimal ammounts compared to a 80 gallon tank filter.

I'd like to point out that in a pond you only turn the water over once an hour where as in a tank you are supposed to turn it over 10 times an hour so a pond filter rated at 500 gallons may be equivalent to an aquarium filter rated at 50 which would be less than 80.

ah ha, I suppose that set ups ok for him though as it will have a large black shark and thats about it. He has small common pleco in there aswell.

Oh well worth a thought!!

wy not just buy a pump and DIY the res for a canister filter I got a 2100 GPH pump for 71 bucks at the local water pump store (Yes we have one I know its wierd) there are all sorts of options for big tanks. Especially if you dont care about fry.

the bigger the filter the slower the water flow need to be..

I have a 250 gallon tank with 4x oscars, 3x clown knifes and 4x common pleco's and it filter by a pond filter??

I use the have canister filter ( 2xsacem's and one eheim pro ) this wasnt working to well as the oscars is kinda messy, so I changed it all for a sumb with a pond pump 1200gph, this was worse as the sumb needed cleaning once a week..

I then got a pond filter, a closed unit, look like a drum with some pipes, I added the normal koi filter media, its running now for 6 months on a 800gph pump and the tank is crystal clear.. I would even use a pond filter on my discus tanks..

But you need two people to help clean or move the filter.. its very big compared the canister filter, doesnt always fit in the tank's stand..

My LFS man is usig quite a small pump on it from what I could see the type you would put put on a fountain.

What make/model filter are you using? The Bioforce that my fish shop uses is asealed presurised cannister. When using in thepond u can burry it up to the lid!!.
