Well its a sad day. I lost my fire eel today, to my Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri. :-(

I came home from work to see the eels tail sticking out of the Polypterus' mouth, I tried to free the poor eel, but unfortunatly I was too late. :-(

This is the second time it had tried to eat another tank mate, it tried to eat a golden nugget plec about 12months back. but I managed to save the plec (But sadly he died from a bacterial infection)

Is it time to find a new home for the endlicheri? I dont know... I love the damn fish, but he is a damn pain in the ass, and yeah I know he is doing what comes natural.

The eel was a good 6" and Id had him since he was only a few inches long...

Im going to go and cry in a small dark room

Endis are one of the more nasty birchirs mate. And a 6" fire eel is an easy snack for it. you obviously know how big it will get so can work out what it can eat so its up to you what you do with it. I like endis but wouldnt get one as I prefer my rays disk intact.

Thats true, I was worried about, but they had been fine for 12months. Its a damn shame.

I might rehome him, I should get a decent amount for him as he is fat 9"+ maybe 10" now, and also a 6" fire eel wider

awwwww :(

sell the Endli....then get a new eel?

Rehome the endi and get a different species I have kept senegal, palmas palmas and palmas poli and they have not been bad also delhezi work ok.

I have other polypterus:

- P. senegalus senegalus
- P. senegalus merdonalis
- P. delhezi

I think I will, now off to AC to post the sod!

thats put me off... but he is gorgeous

how big is your eel? mine was a skinny worm of an eel :D

ones about 15 inch and the other about 12 inch. But I got three reedfish in there two about 12 inch and one about 8 inch and there a lot thinner than fire eels so I'd worry about them. My existing Ornate is about 8 inch I think

After all that the damn fish didnt eat the eel... It regurgitated it... found it dead this morning, slightly chewed

hey §tudz that's sad but well that's nature, what you need is yet another tank to keep him in, so you can keep him, he may be a sod but he sounds like he has loads of character...

yeah he is a great fish, but I dont have room for another big tank.

I suppose I could sell my small tanks and get a long shallow tank for it.
