Plese Some One Explain

Hey everyone i was just wondering if someone could tell me what a cichlid is and if they need any special requirements to keep or restrictions on what fish to keep it with, this is just out of common interest!! any help would be appreciated! thanx.

Its rather a big subject.
Cichlids are a species of fish.There are over 900 types and most of these are found in Africa although about 200 are found in the Americas.They range in size from about 2" upwards and range from quite peaceful to very aggressive.
Some can be put into a community tank with other fish and some have to be kept either in a single species tank or with other large fish.
So it isnt just one fish.They range from rams and angelfish to discus and everything in between.If you have a look at the pinned articles and the fish index it should help you
Sorry this is the bare bones but it is a very very big subject
There are also sites devoted to cichlids so you could try googling as well

Yup, cichlids certainly cover a incredibly wide range of fish - from 1" to 30", monogomous, polygomous, grouping, herbivores, omnivores, carnivores, deep water, shallow water, hard water, soft water... To put it one way, any information regarding simply 'cichlids', with the exception of certain invisible or subtle physical traits that they all share, is bound to be wrong because of how different these fish can be. The main biotopes are South America, Central America, West Africa, and the three East African Rift lakes, and there are still others from Asia and various other parts of the globe.
