Hello :)

I have a 150G. setup thats been running for quite some time now, its a very mature tank.

Since day 1 I have been running a reverse flow undergravel filter, a canister filter, a skimmer and tons of live rock. So lots of filtration in the tank.

I was wondering how it would effect the tank if I removed the undergravel filter tubes. Just like a plenum it would create a dead space under the substrate. The idea is that the dead space helps in the denitrifying process.

Will this work in my setup? Does anyone have experience with Plenum systems ? :)

Any responses very much appreciated! Thank you.

the Plenum could work. However, for things like a depp snd bed and plenums to work effectively you need to have them free from tings like liverock stitting on them.. This is why many DSB systems etc are kept in sumps so the liverock doent impact on its surface and cause deadspots within the sand.

I see :)

Well that wouldnt work then I have rocks stacked up to the top ;)

Thanks for your help !

A plenum can still work with lr in the main tank. The important thing is elevating the rock so it isn't contacting the surface. The easiest way to do this is with plastic eggcrate material, often sitting on stilts on each corner. This allows waterflow to aid in preventing deadspots and also makes more of the liverock available to be utilised by pods, etc.
