Most aren't algae eaters, they're omvinorous or carnivores so you'll want to have some kind of carnivore pellet to the mix.

You can buy catfish pellets or feed them vegetables, but I used to have a common pleco that I didn't bother feeding, he did well and grew just by scavanging leftovers from other fish and the algae... I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you. BTW those common plecs can grew pretty big so you better have space for him.....

I have a gold emperor plec, mine eats :

Hikari sinking wafers (loves em)

Tetra sinking pellets (goes nuts for em)

Frozen bloodworm (on occassion)

He also eats at night, so i'd be suprised if you did see him eat untill he's settled and ok. Plec's are also notorius for hiding, i have a piece of mangrove root, as i have a discus tank he lives in, and he loves living in it and feels more secure with the bolt hole should he need it.

my common plec before at up all the algae in my aquarium ( good ) the sinking wafers ( ok ), other fish food ( tolerable ) half of the plants in my aquarium ( baad) so i had to move him somewhere else, in another tank that is : ) and they are right be carefull of the size, they grow really really biiig !!!! heheh read this, funny story about plecs here, but im in nooo way agains em :) i find em nice
