Hi Could you guys please ID this plec for me and any other info. When I bought it the LFS told me it was something "red...." cant remember though and searching around the net does not reveal anything close to the name...

Let me guess, it was sold as a red leopard pleco or red leopard Sailfin

Hope your upgrading your tank soon as it looks like a very nice Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps to me,
i.e. potentially a 2 foot long fish

The name sounds fimiliar...

No I will not be upgrading my tank. If size does become a problem for it - I will be donating/giving this fish away to a LFS. I was looking on the internet could be a Pseudacanthicus leopardus

Not to rag on anyone, but I don't understand people who buy fish without knowing what it is or having done research on it, what it's requirements/compatibilty are and what size it would get.

Its understood that you do not want to "rag" on anyone - but if thats all you posted to say its not very helpful and one could perceive that as a negative remark...not very helpful and infact it can be quite insulting. Now I feel as though i may as well not even have bothered posting on here, after reading that. In another part of this forum the same discussion was going on whereby uncalled for comments as such drive people away from these forums.

Thanks to everyone else for there useful and constructive comments.

I don't think it was "uncalled for" in fact maybe more people should say things like this so that people would learn to make educated choices when buying fish to make sure that they can properly care for the fish and as well as not endagering the fish already in their tank. I don't think it is wise for people to take the attitude of "oh well, when he gets too big for the tank, I'll just give him away.

If you think that by my saying that people should be educated about the pets they buy is insulting, than you must be very thin skinned. Having said that, I am not trying to be insulting.

Boohoo. You know he totally in the right.

sorry but in some ways you are right but i think everyone has picked up a fish that they have no clue over, plus some fish shops name them under different names to what they are so sometimes you think youve got a fish for your size tank but in fact u havent.this is what the forums are here for though for people to help give advice to people.

thanks because in the shop we did talk about the sizes and i was told it will be around 6-7". thats why i went for it.its only after i started reading on here that i got a bit worried which is why i asked for it to be Id'ed first. now some fish keepers may not even bother to do that!
Now im in two minds about whether to let it stay for a while or to give it away asap...

wel its up to you but it wont take it long for it to grow big as i had one thinking it was somethig it wasnt best way see if you can swap it at the shop you bought it at and ask for a bristlenose as these only grow 3 -4 inch but least youve learned a lesson in fish keeping everyone does it :good:
