This is Big Bruce a plec inherited with a new tank that was donated to our school. He is much loved by the kids but due to not being well looked after by his previous owner his fins look like crap. Quite shredded, holes and completely missing in places.

Is this type of thing treatable? If so in what way and how long will it take?

Also, for a bonus. Does anyone know what species of plec he is?

:good:

Hmm, my first question would be...Do you know what his previous tank mates were?

And the next suspision might be fin and tail rot.

They will grow back but will brobably still be a little ragged on the edges. Watch the edges for any white area. That would indicate fin rot and can be treated with many different meds. My favorite is Formalin MS. I did not see any white in the photo so I would just watch him. It's a good idea to look at all the fish every day then if any diseases occur you catch them early and they are easier to treat.

Bad water quality is usually the cause of finrot.
Thats bad you will need a bacterial med.
Good luck.
