my fish are dying thick and fast

it started with a swordy that appeared to have a dodgy looking gill however it was lively and eating normal until 2 days ago when one of my crabs had demolished the majority of it ... i was fuming to say the least ... but gave it benefit of the doubt and thought my fish may have died and the crab was on clean up duty
however yesterday morning i woke to another swordy that was half eaten and dead ... plus what looked like nibbled fins on my dwarf female gourami ... all other fish seemed fine .
then today i have come home from work to a red hook with only one eye but was swimming around still no nibbled fins etc ... went out this evening and things the same ... came home an hour ago to a dead male dwarf gourami and the one eyed red hook had also died ... i have a platty with a white shadow on the top edge of the tail and also a dosile swordy and plec is a bit iffy i think .. no other signs of fin damage ...i removed the crabs thinking they could be snacking on the other fish and one of the crsbs has 2 legs missing .... any clues to what it could be im totally devastated and i know i need to act fast or i could loose everything
been feeding tomato for pleco and cat fish ... last did water change on wed night no fish dead then . recently added new plants and aquatic sand both bought from sams lfs :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

I can see why you are worried, first off post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, the dodgy gill was it inflamed and red, any heavy breathing or flicking against objects, any darkness in colour of the fish, and fluffy bit on the fish.

I think it's probably the crabs. That's the only thing I can think of that would do that kind of damage. If it were just them dying off, then I would think some illness, but when there are injuries....

The crabs are probably not ideal tank mates for the fish, and maybe not for each other, if they, too, are showing injuries.

Many sympathies for the loss of your fish. Hopefully, taking out the crabs should prevent you from losing any more. I think it will, personally.

White stringy poo can be internal parasites, or a bacteria infection, have the fish lost weight, or bloated up abit.

Red gills can be due to high nitrites, and gill flukes, I would do a water change with all the deaths, get water tested immediately. Here is an article for you just to make sure in wasn't gill flukes.

i agree with the water changes, theres a possability with changing to sand you removed a large amount of benafisal bacteria, which could of carsed a spike in your ammonia/nitrite, which your crab is benifiting from.

i lost 11 fish and 2 crabs this weekend all due to a fungal infection ... last fish passed away during the night
ive treated the tank and up to now what fish i have remaining dont appear to be affected at all so fingers crossed ... i didnt realise how quick this thing could work !

Sorry for all your losses, hope you don't lose anymore, glad you found the problem.
