Hi all,

I have a minor emergency, I have had my 350ltr tank cycled for about 6 weeks now, ity is fully cycled using the fishless cycle as posted here on the forums. In the past week we have been experiencing a greenish algea problem, so we used Intrepet grren away, however yesterday we noticed that our Rams, and our Rainbow fish had white spots on their fins and tails. So a quick look around the forums confimred that this is probably White Spot, so I bought some Intrpet White spot plus and added it to the tank. I double checked all amounts to be added and am sure I have not overdoesed the tank.

I have a fluval 405 external filter, and a small internal filter which I am trying to build up a bacteria colony in.

the PROBLEM is that this morning all of our fish are now gasping for air at the top of the tank, I am about to do an emergency water change, to try and re-airate the water, but why would adding these two medications cause a lack of oxygen?

Have I done anything wrong, is there anything else I can do?

Hey Adrian,

No youve done nothing wrong. Alot of these White spot medications cause excessive surface tension.

YOu need to get your surface water moving as much as possible. Get an air stone on if you can do that, turn your filter up etc, anything really to incrase air supply.

Also - What is the active ingridient in that treatment ? make sure you have NO carbon, zeolite or UV in any filters, as this removes the medications.

With white spot, the quicker you can make them hatch the better, so if possible, increase your temp a small ammount. What is the temp now ? I have Ich in my tank at the moment and its now at about 81-82 degress, which is fine.

Dont do a water change You should only do as specified in the instructions with the medication.

Also you said - 2 medications....which 2 are you using ? Alot of medications are NOT compatible with white spot meds.

Hi Thanks for the quick response,

I had the Temp up to about 82-83 degrees as everything I have read says to get the temp up slowly to aid the hatching thus enabling the use of treatments.

Interpet, Anit White Spot Plus, contains Formaldehyde and Methanol. I can not find anything else.

So I am doing my water change now, and hopefully this will help. I will then move my filter a little to create more surface agitation, and redose with White spot treatment in a couple of days as instrucated on the packet.

Any other advice will be greatfully recieved.

Adrian

Thats about it yep.

I have always found King British Ws3 to be the best, but its only my choice.

As long as you stick to it, you should be OK.

Nothing more you can do, other than try not to stress them, i.e. keep your eye on your water stats, make sure you ammonia etc dont creep up, as some meds can effect your filter bacteria.
