Okay, it's official. I'm stupid. I bought some fish the other day, but didn't look at the name of one of the fish I bought. Its kinda orangy/yellow and black striped, with dark fins and tail, and kinda long. He was fine at first, but the last few days he's been laying at the bottom of the tank, and not doing anything, for minutes at a time.. then when I go near the tank he seems to come back to life and goes back to normal. I'm a bit worried tho because when he's at the bottom of the tank he dosnt move, it's like he's dead. Is he going to die? :(

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Take a pic of the fish and put it up in tropical chit chat.
Stats in ammonia,nitrite,nitrate,and ph.
Is the fish bloated, or heavy breathing.
When some fish lay to one side at the bottom of the tank its a sign of a bacterial infection.

I feel so stupid. I dont know what size the tank is, BUT it's not very big at all. I also dont have any strips to test the water, but I figure I should get some?

The fish that's doing it is the orange one >>

and the other fish in the tank are 6 black neon tetras, and 6 neon tetras. So 13 altogether.

dosnt seem bloated, and cant notice any heavy breathing, but clearly I'm crap at this so I probably wouldn't know. :|

this is a clown loach!! its pretty typical behavior for them actually lol you may even see him laying on his side on the bottom looking even more dead, keep a close eye on him/her to rule anything else out but its probs normal behavior so dont worry too much :) these fish are also bottom dwellers so will spend alot of time there anyway :good:

Ooo thanks, lol I feel a lot better now. I was really worried, I havn't lost any yet, I didn't want him to die :( lol ... but yea, thanks so much :) xxxx

Get water tested and tell them to write the readings down for you.
Measure the tank with a tape measure in length, width, and height.

I agree clown loaches do show that behavour and he looks healthy enough to me, his colours are lovely and bright.
But they should not be kept on there own, they need to be kept in groups to be happy.

The guy in the shop said that he would be okay on his own (as I did ask him), and said it's best to see how I get on with him because he might get kinda big (as my tank is pretty small)

Would you suggest getting another? How big do they generally get?

Even small clown loaches shouldnt be kept in anything less than a 50gal, as they get bigger 90gal tanks.
And a lfs should never sell one cloown loach on there own, they have to be kept in groups.
I would find a better lfs as that one lousy on advice.

I'm going to go and get another one tomorrow then.. I feel really guilty now :( aw lol... and yes I'd noticed they werent great with the advice they've given me so far, which isnt good seeing as I'm really pretty clueless.. I think I'll have a look for somewhere else

Also, thanks for that link... I just had a look and it said to feed them cucumber? How big would I have to cut it for him to be able to eat it?

Why not just take him back.
Cut a small chunk off the cucumba, remove the seeds though some say it fine and some say not.
Pop in boiling water for a few seconds.
Weight down with a plant weight and rubber band.

Awh I'm kinda attached to him :|

Can you take fish back? I didn't think they'd accept them. I really have a lot to learn :|

And okay thanks, I might try and give him some cucumber now

Measure the tank and we can advise you more.

Its up to you but that fish will be unhappy on its own and i'm more concerned about the fish.
Plus he won't be happy in a small tank.

Clown loaches easily grow to about 6+ inches in the aquarium. They like the company of their own kind, as they are playful, active fish. Without company your loach will be lonely, and when he feels like playing will harass your other fish.

Plus they have been known to live for 20 years.
