What is this coming out of my angel?!?! Sorry if it's something normal but it looks like he's heamorraging!!

Thanks!

It looks like a reproduction gland. Have your angels spawned recently?

No. I only recently got them and I'm not even sure on the sex. That angel is quite bloated as well!

Can't really see the bloating in the photo and the angel looks very healthy. As far is sex is concerned, theyare almost impossible to sex. I have 4 that I have had for almost 3 years and I have only recently learned that I have 1 male and 2 females for sure (both females have spawned and the same male fertilized the eggs each time - think the 4th is also a female because of size)). I will have someone else that breeds angels take a look at it. Hopefully, he can shed some light on it.

I have been reading up on breeding and all site say 1st signs are angelfish become aggressive but mine have not been behaving any differently. They are not cleaning areas or anything. Also they describe the papillae as small and nipple like but this is pretty large and thick. It looks like his intestines are coming out or something. It's red in colour and he keeps rubing his fins on it!

Really worried he's dying.. but hope he's just getting ready to breed!!

Yes, that photo definitely looks like something out of the ordinary. He/she does look extremely healthy though. No sign of fin damage or loss of color. I have PMed Tolak to take a look at this. Hopefully, he can shed some light on it.

Thanks! Hopefully he'll be able to help... it looks horrible!

I also PMed WIlder who is great when it comes to diseases, parasites and the like. I ese she is actually posting a reply on the thread you posted in the Emergency forum.

Wilder is great, very good knowledge :)

Intestinal prolapse, usually caused by constipation or intestinal parasites/infection. Keep the angel in a med tank, keep the water as clean as possible, which means daily water changes. Fast the fish for 2 or 3 days, this may reduce the protrusion some, as well as feeding a more vegetable based diet.

Sometimes these things solve themselves with a dietary change, sometimes the fish lives a normal life with the protrusion, sometimes the protrusion gets infected, which usually means euthanizing the fish is necessary. I would start least invasive, with clean water and a diet heavier in vegetable matter & lighter in protein.

Thank you for the advice!

Ok so the fish made it through the night so I'm not feeding him today. My hospital tank is very small for an angelfish (around 6 litres) how long does he have to stay in there? I don't mind doing daily water changes on my min tank if it means he can go back .

This morning his prolapse has almost completely gone back in he's acting completely nomally (as he has been the whole time).

What vegetable based foods will and angelfish eat?

Just before the prolapse I fed my tank live blood worm... could this of caused it?

Thanks again!

Oh and should i treat him/the whole tank with anti parasite meds?

Just want to mention that I just looked at him now and he is pooping and it's healthy looking and dark... does this rule out parasites and or constipation??

Bloodworms are a protein rich food, and will tend to constipate angels. I feed angels frozen bloodworms once every week or two, and follow with a feeding of frozen brine shrimp the next day. The brine shrimp has a lot of roughage, and helps keep them from becoming constipated.

Spirulina flake has a bit more veggie to it, as would some broken up algae tabs that are usually fed to plecs. I get a good veggie pellet from Angels Plus that I feed to all my fish, angels love the stuff. It has all sorts of things such as squash & carrots in it, I believe in as good a diet as possible for my fish, but I really can't turn my fishroom into a vegetable cellar as well.

6 liters is just shy of 2 gallons, I would do daily 50% water changes, if you are solving the problem with diet there is no need to medicate. I would keep the fish in there for a week, so you can keep closer tabs on the fish & diet.

Thanks! He's been in the hospital tank for 2 days and i've been doing 50% daily changes. His prolapse has totally gone, as has the bloating. I fed him 1 mushed up pea this morning, he showed some interest but did not eat (he normally eats peas in my main tank). I'm a little worried about keeping him in the hospital tank as he is quite pale and not really eating but in every other way seems fine. I will leave him for today in the hospital tank but then I think tomorrow I will put him back and feed live brineshrimp.

It's easy to monitor him in my tank as it is only 50 and he's always out in the open not hiding behind plants.

Thanks for the advice!
