Ok got up this morning, and tested my water... (90litres Hex tank)

Ammonia 4.0
Nitrite 0.1
PH 6.5
NitrAte 5.0

I did an immediate 50% water change to get rid of the Ammonia, and tested my water again after half n hour.

Ammonia 2.0
Nitirite 0
NitrAte 2.5
PH 6.5

I need to some REAL help here guys, can i change the water AGAIN? Bearing in mind i have just done a 50% water change?? The ammonia is far too high, and i dont want any deaths.

Also can anyone explain this, i did a water test yesterday, and my reading for Ammonia was 0, so how come today it shot up to 4.0??

I need to take some immediate action here, another water change perhaps? 50% again??

Thanx Claire x

Ok guys, i REALLY need help now...

I have done 2, 50% partial water changes today, due to Ammonia.

My water stats now, are as follows :~

Ammonia 2.0 (still :( )
Nitrite 0
PH 6.5
NitrAte 0

What can i do about the Ammonia? Bearing in mind i have now done TWO 50% partial water changes, i dont want to lose all my bacteria, what do you suggest another water change today? or monitor it, and do it tommorow?

Any help please..

Have you tried interper ammonia remover? You can use this every 2-3 hrs til levels are down to 0.1 or 0? Also try a filter booster. High ammonia levels caused by fish waste. Too many fish?

Hope this helps!

No i havnt tried putting anything in to kill the ammonia, i have been using up until 4 days ago Prime(red) which also does this, but i wanted to cycle my tank without chemicals etc....

Maybe another water change? Today or Tommorow?
I have already done 2, 50% changes today, fish are thriving, the water is clear, everyone looks happy.....

Oh dear :/ I think a lot of problems are actually caused by things such as ammonia and nitrate removers - which in my opinion then just messes with the cycling process. I think you've done enough water changes for now. Just keep a close eye on any significant distress signs. But for now you've done what you can. Do not add any more ammonia removers or other chemicals apart from water conditioners / dechlorinators.
At this point in time your fish are unfortunately not "thriving" in such water conditions - they are only surviving - or trying to :/
You are doing the best you can though.
Check your water stats again tomorrow and do another 25% change.

Good luck !

Thanx alot....

I dont want to add ANY chemicals to this water, i am going to try my best to get it cycled and healthy by doing water changes etc..

I will do another test this evening, and tmrw morning, and do another partial water change..

Thanx for you advice

Ive just done another Ammonia test... Its still at 2.0 which i know is bad, i have done 2 partial water changes today 50% each time, and dont want to risk another one today :/ Unless you guys think i should?

I have no chemicals in there, other than de-chlorinator for the water, and cycle.

The fish look fine, but i am getting worried.... as i know this ammonia is bad. :-(

Ok what i have done is this...

After taking on some advice from people on here, i have taken my brothers filter sponge (he has had his tank set up 7 months), and ive cut it down, and put it in mine, hopefully the mature sponge, will dissolve my ammonia problem..

What do people think of this idea? Will it cycle my tank quicker? Is there a possibility that this action will kill my fish?

I some bacteria in ur filter have die from unkown reason. Add some zeolite to ur filter and do alot of water change 50+% every days might help. good luck to ya.

just cut it wouldn't kill the bacteria will just decrese the number thats all. Once the sponge leave water for more then 30 minutes bacteria will start to die off. So I dont know what might possibly cause the ammonia spike as there r alot of possibility. One which u use tap water to wash the sponge and that will eventurally wipe out all the bacteria.

I didnt use tap water to rinse off the sponge, i took it out of my brothers filter, and cut it down and put it into mine, it was out of his tank for around 20 mins, i didnt wash it, i just put it straight into my filter as it is, this is what i was advised to get the bacteria levels up..etc...

I am going to test ammonia again soon, and do another 25-50% water change tmrw, depending on my readings

panicking is the worse thing that you can do so calm down! i had same problem a while back and it takes small water changes daily to bring levels down to 0, dont do such drastic water changes as this could have the wrong effect! just do SMALL daily water changes and take readings daily.
you need to try and find out what caused ammonia spike (normally by process of elimination) ie when i had this i managed to work out that it was caused by adding live daphnia that i had left in bag too long. hopes this helps and remember stay calm dont panic

Thanx

Im not really panicking, but i have done 2 partial water changes today 50% each, and my ammonia level moved from 4.0, to 2.0, but its still reading 2.0, so if 50% water changes dont get rid of it, what will??

I will do another 25% water change tmrw, i am only worried about the fish, whilst ever there is ammonia in there, arnt they going to suffer? :-(

Keep up with water changes, add an airstone for extra aeration, and ammonia is not as toxic in acidic ph.
