I resently purchased aquarium and equipment for tropical habitat. Problem is that the customer service told me nothing about setting up my tank and taking all the proper precautions before adding my fish. So I bought a few different varieties of fish along with my setup, took them home, got my tank running and then added my fish. so guess what. I am hoping that there is some way of saving the fish that have toughed it out this long before it is to late. Is there Hope for my poor fishy's?

Totally flipin usual. There happy to get your money and that's about it.

Right so I take it you know a tank should cycle before it's ready for your fishes to live in.
First option. Take the fish back and tell then to hold them until your tanks ready. Make a total fuss, and tell them you'll tell everybody on the net if they don't.
Or cos that won't work we can deal with the prob. Feed the minimum, to reduce waste. Lower the tempature slightly and increase the water displacement in the tank, i.e. point the filter upward slightly to move the water on the surface. If new tank syndrome hits the tank it can cause your fish to sufficate, these two ideas will help defend your fish against this.

Next Before we start telling you what to do next I'll need a bit more info to help see what stage your at.

1. Setup details. Tank size, filtration method. Have you done any cleaning.
2. How long has the tank been running.
3. What fish do you have and there size.
4. Have you carried out any tests on the tank water, if so what were the readings. If not I suggest you do some. Ammonia, NitrIte, NitrAte, Ph.

That will do for now. :look:

Yes there is definately hope!

It depends on what type of fish you have also.  You can do water changes too to help lower the levels of chemicals if you do tests and they are high.

But really you need to buy some tests and test the water for Ammonia NitrIte and NitrAte (ph would be useful but is not essential)

If you have any dead fish? take them out immediately and if there are I suggest doing a 10-20%water change in the tank and use water from the cold tap as the hot water tank is usually made of copper which when in the water can kill the fish!

Hi Folks,

Just a thought, but how about posting geographical information. As this group grows, it could potentially be very useful.

If someone could get their fish to me, as in buck777 case, I'd be happy to look after them for a few days until his/her tank had cycled.

For most of my fish, I accept that if something goes wrong I would just replace them, but my favourites are a different matter.

I've very recently suffered a case where the sand became toxic, and despite daily water changes, cleaning etc and I lost 4 fish during the change over to gravel.
I couldn't move them to another tank because they were all predators, and would simply eat the smaller fish.

I realise that there is the risk of disease etc, but I occasionally have spare tank which could help other people.

Thoughts/comments would be welcome.

Not to sound nasty but

If you look on the left hand side of your post, just under your name, where it says location. Yes Location. So if you fill out your profile we'll all know where you live

So since William is the main man when it comes to the programing of this forum and he spent ages trying to get the small program that displys for location please fill it in, and the rest of the information helps to.
Like Gaza once suggested an area where you could place your fish information, like tank size, fish, and all the daft stuff that help with answering questions, these could be filled in on your intrests bit.
All this is available, plus remember this forum is only 15 days old so when we get to know each other better we can help quite easyily :D

Davy,

You renembered me  how nice. But what a good idea to place your tank / fish details in the interests section.

I agree it is a good idea I will look into it. Maybe people could put it in as their signature at the bottom of each post cause then everyone could see although it could get annoying I suppose. The interests section could also be used.

William

Ok Davy good point, missed it the first time around, I've updated my profile.
