I have a female platy and I don't know what is wrong with her! I was looking into the tank and I noticed one of my females hanging towards th back. Upon closer inspection I noticed her scales seem to be bulging/popping out. It almost looks as if she is shedding! Is this a disease or something I can fix? Or should I quarentine her or just end her suffering? Please help my poor girl!

There's another recent thread here about dropsy (or Oedema) with good information and advice but basically, the illness is a terminal symptom of internal damage (from infection or whatever) and isn't likely to be cured. Its best to remove your platy in case whatever caused the dropsy is contagious and infects the other fish. You could try medicating her but she is most likely to die so it's up to you how long you want to try or if you prefer to euthanise her. :-( sorry :-(

you really need to quarantine her,
at all costs try to save her rather than killing her
if possible put her in another tank by herself
although not really any treatments for dropsy fish can sometimes cure themselves
the chances of her survival are not good at all
although you definitely need to get her away from your other fish
dropsy is contagious
hope this helps

This is dropsy. Do not kill her! Please ty to save her, it would be wise to quarantine her and do a water change of 50%

dropsy is contagious

Dropsy is not contagious, because it is not a disease, it is a symptom of another problem - which could potentially be contagious. The swelling is caused by the failure of the internal organs, and consquently, there is a build-up of fluids within the body.

Once the internal organs have failed it is unlikely that any treatment will work, especially as you don't know what the underlying issue is. If you are able to isolate the fish, give it an Epsom Salts bath, to try to draw out the fluid.

When my platy suffered from dropsy, I treated for a week, but then had to take THAT decision.

Sad to say, there have been a good half-dozen dropsy threads over the last week or two. Of those where the member posted an outcome, all were of the fish dieing.

Well my lfs was no help and I had no choice but to end her suffering. I also had another platy die this morning. Have no idea what happened to her. I did a water change and actually bout another tank. I think I may have too many in one tank. My plan was to buy another tank for the other side of my entertainment center. I have 13 fish in one tank. Time to make some growing room I guess. Going to put 6 in the new tank today

That's so sad! sometimes it really is just to late :(

It's all good, yesterday was my birthday so I put half of the fish in the new tank and all are doing much better! My husband picked me out this gorgeous VT betta to put in there as well. Got them some bubble curtains and they LOVE it, they swim through it, it's sooo adorable!
