Hello, this is my first post on this forum, and my dad recently bought a new 92 gallon tank that is curved and fits in a corner for our fish. We have 3 parrot fish, a pleco, another catfish thats very old now but not sure what he is, and some other fish I dont know what there called (its my dads tank not mine), but a couple small white catfish, and other smaller fishes. Anyways, we had the pleco, old catfish, a small fish and the parrot fishes in another tank, and ever since we switched tanks, weve been having many problems. At first it was very cloudy, but we got to clear that up, and it went to normal, then algai started growing on a fak piece of coral, and a bunch of other stuff very quikly, and now the entire tank is cloudy, and greenish. We read to limit the lights, and weve done that, we only have them on a couple hours throughout the day. Then my dad switched about 50-60% of the water, and still nothing and he did the same this morning. I dont know much about the chemicals, because my dad does that, but what can be wrong? And what should I we do about this? I really dont want the fish to die, or get sick, and need help ASAP. Thanks in advance.

Oooh yea, and this is a freshwater tank by the way.

Did you cycle the tank before adding fish, what are your water stats e.g. ammonia, nitrites, nitrates? It sounds like the tank is either cycling or is going through new tank syndrom.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum,

Did you cycle the tank before adding the fish? It sounds like the tank could be suffering from new tank syndrome. Have a read in the pinned topics.

Its best to do small water changes daily rather than 60%at a time as this could just make things worse. Do you know the test readings for ammonia, nitrate and nitrite as this will say if the tank is still cycling.

:hi:

Sorry I dont know the readings for the ammonia and stuff, my dad does though because its his tank, Ill ask him when he gets home from work. Thanks for the help, Ill get back in a little while with the test readings.

If your water parameters are fine ammonia 0, nitrites 0, and nitrates 50 or less then you might want to try Algone. It will get rid of algae in your tank. But, it could also kill live plants. You didn't mention you had live plants. There are also other products that contain essence of barley hay. These products work well too.

I noticed you have a pleco in the tank. Some species of pleco are carnivores. Meaning, they don't do a good job of getting rid of algae in your tank. Those plecos prefer protein in their diet. The best plecos at getting rid of algae are bristlenose plecos. I have had a couple of them clean out a 125 gallon tank within a week.

The nitrate nitrite and amonia are 0, but is 0 nitrate alright? Because you said 50 or less, but its 0 so if that fine? Thanks.

Thanks Wilder. I dont have any plants though, no fake or real ones by the way. Just fake coral and rocky looking things, but the algae grew like crazy on that stuff though. Thanks again for the link.
