I bought a small blue jack the other day to put in my aquarium with my small oscar. The aquarium is 75g. I first put him in my hospital tank that was cycled 2 months ago. The only resident is a paradise gourami. I noticed about an hour ago that he was swimming erratically and breathing heavily. I tested the water and the Nitrates are 20, nitrites were 5.0ppm. Ammonia is 0.

I tested the water the other day and it was fine. I took him out of the hospital tank and placed him in a breeder net in the 75g tank. (he is 2.5 inches).

What else can I do to save him? I put an airstone in with him (thought it couldn't hurt). He was expensive and I don't want to loose him.

Right now he is breathing heavy on his side in the breeder net,

Thanks
Ray

$24.99

His fins are not closed at all, he is moving his side fins as he lays there just as he would if he were upright.

Blue dempseys are very sensitive fish, and would surely be affected by the 5ppm nitrites. Are you sure your tank is cycled?

P.T.

Yeah, it cycled quite some time ago.

Checked the levels 2 days ago, Ammonia was 0 and so were nitrites and nitrates....

Maybe I'm mistaken but if a tank is cycled shouldn't there be at least some nitrates? Perhaps it's gone into a mini-cycle.

I think fish are much cheaper at the North Pole :D

$24.99 is actually the cheapest I have seen them.

You have an Electric Blue Jack Dempsey? I have seen plenty of regular Jack Dempseys for $5 or cheaper. Most of the shops around here sell the Electric Blue Jacks for $35-$40.

Anyways, I think he "MIGHT" be coming back around. He is now sitting upright and swimming a little bit.

After 50% water change replenished by water from the 75g, nitrites are 0.5ppm and nitrates are 5ppm.
