Hey guys,

I am having a bit of an algae problem, and need to know some nice looking, fast growing plants that will help clear it up. I would also like to know, some easier to look after plants.

I have some pots, with fluorite gravel, but I stopped using liquid ferts, as everyone I talk to in my home town says theirs grows better without fertilizer, which can only make me think our water has lots of metals.

Anyways, I will most likely get some of those black plastic pots with the slits in them too. I got some Java fern and an Amazon sword in the tank at the moment. Will lead weights hurt my fish? Sorry for all the questions. Here is what I am thinking (but could you add some more to it in scientific name please?):

Cabomba
Wisteria
Hairgrass (grow fast?)
Anubis Nana (not a fast grower I know)

Thats about it, all our plants at work are in scientific names, so commons won't really help. My tank has about 2 WPG. C02 is also added to the tank.

Thanks,

DL

Hi DiscusLova,

For fast growing plants with no special requirements i'd recommend:-

Limnophila Sessiliflora
Aponogeton Crispus

These two varieties in particular but i think most Limnophila and Aponogeton varieties will do the job. :good:

Oh, just had another thought, Vallisneria are good also. :good:

DiscusLova,

I bought some Limnophila Sessiliflora (sold to me as Ambulia) for my tank (Juwel 60 with standard light) 3 weeks ago and its
growing well - I'm going to have to trim it soon, after only 3 weeks.

I've also got Elodea Densa, Vallisneria Spiralis, a Java Fern, some Java Moss and an unidentified Crypt that are doing well.

I did have Bacopa Monieria and that grew a lot, but it got really 'leggy', so I pulled it and replaced it with the Ambulia.

Thanks for the replys. I am not sure if my store carries those, but I will keep an eye out. Any other recommendations?

Thanks,

I started my planted tank a few months ago. Here are fast growing plants that I had great success with:

Cabomba
Anacharis
Wisteria
Water Sprite
Vallisneria
Onion Plant
Moneywort

Of these, my favorites are the Wisteria, Vallisneria, and Cabomba.

I also have 2 beautiful Amazon Swords, which grew nicely... but not as fast as the stem plants listed above.

Lead weights aren't great, but sometimes I use them when it is particularly difficult to weigh a plant down (when the substrate is too shallow, stem keeps popping up, etc). Once the plant is anchored, however, I usually remove them. You also have to be very gentle with how you secure the weight, too much pressure, and you can break the plant stems, resulting in rot. If the substrate is deep enough, though, I do not use weights and the plant anchors well on its own.

In my signature, there is a link to easy to care for plants. The plants on that list, I have grown with minimal effort on my part (Tank, substrate, lights, and that's about it).
