I managed to take some pictures of them. Searching through my big book of fishes, "Baensch Aquarium Atlas", I'm pretty sure the first ones a Red Platy (Xiphophorous maculatus) but what is the second one, same size and shape but more yellow than red with black edges to it's caudal fin.

Also, I think they are both females but I'm new to this so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks,

Hi,

:hi: to the forum, they are both female and both look pregnant. The second one is the colour of a sunset platy with markings of a twinbar platy so a sunset twinbar i suppose :D . They are both Xiphophorous maculatus just colour variations.

Emma :)

Thanks Emma,

Pregnant :S

These are the only Platies in the tank and as far as I know they hav'nt seen a male Platy in a long long time, there are a couple of Mollies which I think may be male and one male guppy, can Livebearers cross-breed?

Any guess as to how long before I need to start worrying about fry?

Paul.

Hi,

Platys store sperm and can have upto 6 batches of fry from one mating. They could just be fat but they look suspiciously pregnant. Platys can only breed with swordtails not guppys or mollys so you should be ok there. They are pregnant for about 4 weeks.

Emma :D

Both of those pretty ladies look preggo, specially since they are getting pretty flat on the bottom of the tummy (mine always seem to drop fry when I notice the belly flatten) I got my female gold twin bar and 2 months later I had fry, which she was mated with before I got her, so dont think it cant happen. She has had 3 batches since then, which its been about 3 months.

I've noticed the last couple of days that they are both spending alot of time hiding behind the plants at the back of the tank, occasionaly the twinbar'ish one rises to the top of the tank in a calm area next to the filter and becomes very still, is this a sign that they are close to birthing or is this normal behaviour.

Thanks,

Paul.

Depends really, my female Guppy is doing the same while I type and I no she is preggers and wont be to long, but its all different for each fish!!!

the second one looks more like a variagated. Xiphophorus variatus with some twinbar genes.
